Music inspiration can come from anywhere, even if it doesnt seem conventional traveling, or even exposing yourself to new experiences in your own city can give you a fresh attitude toward creating, learning and teaching. Read on as New York City music teacher Jesse S. shares how a trip to Brazil changed his outlook In the winter of 2008, after playing a concert at Juilliard, I was asked by a cellist in the orchestra if I wanted to go to Brazil that upcoming spring break.   Without even thinking about it, I said yes.   I then realized that I should probably ask what we would be doing in Brazil. Annie, the cellist, knew a conductor in Salvador, Brazil who had started a youth orchestral program called Neojiba.     The conductor and founder of Neojiba, Ricardo Castro, had invited Annie and other musicians from Juilliard to fly down to Brazil during spring break and spend a week working with the students in the youth orchestra.   Neojiba is an amazing program provides instruments and musical training free to low-income youth.   The students range in age from early teens to early 20s. That following March, on a freezing blizzardy day, nine of us boarded a plane headed for Brazil.   After being picked up at the airport, where it was over 90 degrees and thick with humidity, we headed to our amazing hotel, which overlooked the Atlantic Ocean.   We then walked to the Castro Alves Theater to hear the orchestra rehearsal and meet our students for the first time.   Before going to Salvador we were told that most of the students spoke English very well, and there should not be a problem regarding language.   This turned out to be false. As a teacher, this week turned out to be the most amazing musical experience of my life.   The language barrier tested my ability to teach without verbal communication.   I grew as both a teacher and a player in ways I didn’t think I was going to.   Despite not knowing much about classical music, these students had Brazilian music coursing through their veins.   I tried to channel that amazing, effervescent rhythm and energy to Mozart and Beethoven, and they in turn showed me how to bring exciting new life and energy to my classical repertoire.   I was experiencing a true cultural exchange. Although I thought I was going to Brazil to teach, I was the one who became the student.   The students in Neojiba taught me so much.  They showed me true hard work.   After a full day of school, some traveled up to two hours to go to rehearsal every day.   This completely blew my mind.   They taught me a kind of music I had previously not been exposed to.   They showed me passion. The following year we returned to Brazil.   The orchestra had completely transformed.   They were playing beautifully and preparing for an upcoming tour.   I felt I was there more as a fan and observer than a teacher, cheering on a group of amazing musicians and people who had welcomed us into their homes and showed us love.   In Portuguese “iluminado” means enlightened, I can’t find any better words to describe my experience. The grant is payable over three years as Heart offers one-on-one tutoring to more students, scales its work, and becomes more sustainable. $130,000 of the grant goes towards Heart’s current funding initiative, which seeks $880K to partner with 18 schools in the 2017/18 school year. 5 tips for stress-free homework Homework is one of those things that children hate and parents seem to dread. It can be the cause of family arguments and anxiety in those faced with it. But homework doesn't have to be full of stress. With a well-planned after school routine and a few of our simple tips, you can turn homework into something natural and a time for some extra learning whilst giving your children a sense of accomplishment. 1. Have a daily homework routine Homework should very much be part of a normal daily routine, much like making sure your children brush their teeth, have their supper and have a standard bed-time. If you incorporate homework into your child's daily routine, it will no longer be seen as a chore but something that they naturally do everyday. Having a homework calendar is a great idea. Many children have different after school activities at different times during the after-school day. Having a calendar that highlights the time each day your child should be doing their homework will help them get organised; all children feel more settled when they have a routine. Children should have a break when they first get home from school or an after-school club, before delving into more school-work. Allow your child to have their snack or even their dinner and then have a time where they can sit and do their homework. Other activities such as watching television or playing on a mobile device should be saved for after their homework is completed so that they are aware that study comes before play time. 2. Be helpful but don't do it for them There will be many times when your child will need some guidance when it comes to doing their homework. Always have a positive attitude and try to explain difficult problems without giving them the answer. Believing that your child is capable of completing difficult tasks will ensure that they believe they can do it too. Encourage your child to do their own research, guiding them along the way if necessary. Give examples where possible and tell them stories that are significant to their work to give them some ideas. Go through any mistakes they may have made and practice problems with them until you are sure they have understood whilst always encouraging them to discover the answers for themselves. 3. Allow breaks when needed Children should not be expected to sit for long periods of time without taking a brain break. We all know that both adults and children have a certain concentration span and taking a break when needed is of vital importance to their study time. If your child has a lot of homework in one evening try breaking it up and allowing them a snack or a ten-minute time-out in between. Children generally come home hungry from school so having a snack prepared for them or even a full dinner can mean an easier and smoother afternoon. Try to avoid too much sugar in their snacks as this can cause a mood crash a short while later. Instead go for healthy fruit or yoghurt snacks. If your child doesn't need a snack but needs a break you could always just have a chat and a good laugh together, have a bit of fun doing some silly exercises like star-jumps or play a quick game together to reduce the stress and give your child some extra energy. 4. Have a homework station Making sure your child has their own private place where they can sit and do their homework without being distracted is also extremely important. A child that sometimes does their homework on the kitchen table or on their bedroom floor will not feel comfortable and homework will almost certainly feel like a chore. If, however, your child has a regular homework station they will feel better about the work they are faced with and it will help them get into a better routine. A homework station can be a desk in their room or a study and should feel like a place where homework can be done comfortably. Homework stations should be stocked with any necessary tools for their various homework assignments, such as dictionaries, pens, pencils, notebooks, rulers, glue, highlighter pens, scissors etc. That way your child will not have to keep leaving their desk to go and find things that they need. It is a great way to make sure homework is done in a shorter space of time whilst making your child feel comfortable. 5. Keep distractions away Distractions of any sort can be the cause of homework stress and delays. Making sure your child does not have access to any mobile devices, loud televisions or noisy siblings will take away any temptations to stop doing their work and ensure they have the quiet they need to complete their work well. To Conclude Homework may not always be something fun but it does not have to be a chore or the cause of continuous arguments. If you’re just about to head off to business school, you may feel tempted to cut all your ties and start anew. After all, this is a new chapter in your life, right? Well, maybe, but networking is a concept constantly emphasized while in business school. There’s no need to start that process completely over. Connect or reconnect with professors and alumni you knew in the past. If they’ve gone to business school themselves, they can help you understand what you need to do before business school and what it will be like during. These are invaluable resources because they’ve already been there and done that. 2. Do a self-assessment. Optimizing your strengths in business school is the key to success. You may not have all the typical qualities a good business student has, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be just as successful. However, in order to capitalize on your strengths, you need to know them. Go out of your way to find out more about yourself and your leadership style in general. A trusty Myers-Briggs may be in order, or you can splurge on the Gallup Strengths Finder. Both, or any other tests you find, will help you better utilize the assets you already have to leverage your way to the top. 3. Prepare for recruiting. Something that most schools do when all the students arrive in the fall is hold large recruiting fairs with companies to provide various opportunities like internships, part-time work, co-ops, and even full-time jobs. The competition for these spots will probably be fierce, so it is beneficial to prepare ahead of time so your CV isn’t being made at the last minute. Look through your credentials, update your CV and resume, your LinkedIn, and any other professional contacts you may have. Practice a respectable and unique greeting for when you meet these professionals. You’ll be much more likely to create a lasting impression and score some huge opportunities if you’re prepared. 4. Don’t expect to know everything. You may have flourished in your previous years in school, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do just as well in a competitive business school. The standards will be higher and you will work harder than you ever have before. You’ll probably flounder just a bit at first getting adjusted to the rigorous life that is business school. If you let every mistake or misstep get you down, this isn’t going to help you learn and do better. Recognize ahead of time that you’re going to make mistakes and learn from them as you do. This will only help you grow into a better and stronger student. 5. Review what you do know. However, knowing you’ll make some mistakes doesn’t mean you should make all of them. A lot of mistakes can be prevented by simply remembering what you already know. So much time can be wasted trying to relearn old information which can mean you’ll start lagging behind or get overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do at once. Most firsthand accounts of first year business school students say that most of the work is quantitative and methodical. It is likely just learning calculations and other similar things. But if you know and remember most of them, you’ll already be ahead of the game. 6. Attend an orientation. Most business schools will also host some sort of orientation for their new students before the semester starts. However, students that already have previous schooling may forego these because they think they’ve already adjusted. However, most new business school students will compare the first semester of business school to be as disorienting as living in another country. Everything is different. When you’re starting, if you aren’t acclimated, you’re going to spend a lot of your time just trying to figure basic things out instead of really learning. Attend the orientation to get a head start. 7. Just ask. Honestly, if you’re having any questions or qualms about business school, just ask the university. Even during the summer they’ll have at least a few advisers or professors on hand to answer some questions. They’re also the most likely to give you detailed and specific information about the university that you couldn’t really find out otherwise. You may not like calling or contacting people you don’t know, but the payoff may be worth it. Hopefully you’ve found some ideas you feel comfortable and confident to carry out before your first year. Whatever you do, don’t forget to go in with an open mind, ready to learn and to absorb everything business school has to offer you. Mindfullness in Classroom Management

Mindfullness in Classroom Management Mindfulness is not a new concept to me, but I have never taken the initiative to apply the ideas related to mindfulness to my everyday life or in the classroom. What stuck out to me the most in what I learned in my Mindfulness lesson from UT was the idea of consistent change, where one does not hold onto any feelings, but acknowledges it and allows it to pass with the mindset that everything is ever changing. I wanted to implement this concept and practice of non attachment to internal experiences in my life. I felt that this could benefit me on stressful days. Having the mindset that situations and stressors will inevitably change helps me cope with certain scenarios. When children begin to act up in the classroom, I remind myself of this aspect of Mindfulness. I know that I can get stressed easily when I feel that I am losing control of a situation. In order to prevent impulsive actions in reaction to high stress from students, I think about what is happening and I allow myself to think that this situation will pass. I don’t try to fight what is happening, but I acknowledge what is happening. I respond more calmly and the students notice that as well. Instead of pushing myself to fix the situation as quickly as I can, I let the student be, and the tantrums pass. I have implemented this in the classroom several times, and it has clearly produced positive results. In one scenario, a student, who will be referred to as Devon to protect his identity, is a bit of a handful in class. He likes to refuse to do work, yell at other students, disagree to share, and have small fits. In the past, I have aimed to please him to get him to do work, making a few modifications. I have tried moving his clip on the behavioral chart. I have even tried scolding him on some occasions. However, I decided to address what I do not like about his behavior and walk away from him. When I gave him some instructions, he quickly refused to participate. I told him that I expect him to do his work and that I wanted to see him working when I returned again. I then left to check up on other students, knowing that Devon’s attitude would eventually change, if not in this lesson, it would by the end of the day. I was delighted to find that he was working on his assignment when I returned to his table later. A similar situation occurred with another student, who will be referred to as Charlie to protect his identity. Charlie is usually a very good student and enthusiastic, but when it comes to writing, he does not want to do any work. He was particularly non-cooperative on this day, and complained about the assignment to me every time I would walk by. The teacher I was working with even made an announcement that if a student did not finish their writing, they would not be able to use the computers or iPad for their technology center. I tried out that method that I used for Devon before, but Charlie still had not done his work. I even noticed that he got another classmat e to do his writing for him, which I stopped immediately. It got to the point where Charlie threw a tantrum, falling into a fit of tears and anger, since he would not be able to participate in technology. Despite all of this, I still had high hopes that he would return to participating with the class by the end of the day, since I had in mind that his attitude would eventually change. After sitting out for a while, Charlie eventually calmed down and rejoined the group. Even better, he was the most enthusiastic student in the class conversation about the book they were reading that day. Having these positive experiences has really encouraged me to keep implementing this mindset of constant change. It was really effective, and it kept me from stressing and obsessing over dealing with tantrums.
